The name Beltane comes from a festival once common to all Celtic nations. The name derives from Beal, the Celtic god of light, and means 'Beal's fire'. It was held on the beginning of May. Bonfires were lighted and ceremonies performed to implore the god's favor of a productive year.
The Beltane Ranch has been celebrating romantic unions for over 100 years. In 1890, a San Francisco banker named Thomas Bell gave Mary Ellen 'Mammy Pleasant the money to purchase the land and set up a guesthouse on it.
The place and the land speak of something eternally true, symbolized by the oak that crowns the crest of the hill: the coming together of the earth and the sky on this hill foretells joy and fertility to those who visit. A good place, a propitious place, to be married.
